One Laptop per Child is not about a machine, it’s about a movement—and we’d
love you to be a part of it. The first and most important way you can join in
is by donating one or more laptops at amazon.com/xo.
But there’s lots of other ways to participate. You can host your own
fundraising drive, help at a nearby pilot program, or simply telling your
friends about OLPC and helping spread the word.
Give One, Get One
The Give One, Get One program is a chance for you to donate an XO laptop to a
child in a developing nation, and to purchase an XO laptop for yourself.
This allows OLPC to give away thousands of laptops to places like Ethiopia,
Mongolia and Rwanda.
Our Mission
is to create educational opportunities for the world's poorest children by
providing each child with a rugged, low-cost, low-power, connected laptop with
content and software designed for collaborative, joyful, self-empowered
learning
The XO laptop is what enables us to achieve our mission. The XO laptop is build for children, it is made to be carried to school, dropped, and used in rural areas. Because it is low-power and can be used outside, the XO can be used in areas where other laptops would be useless.
Sugar is the name of the software on the XO. It is a special learning invronment created for children, and based on the research of Seymour Papert and others. It is a system that lets a child spend time learning learning, and not just learning computers. Sugar is free software, can be run on other machines, and is build on linux.
A rich
community
of volunteers and users works with OLPC to help us expand our reach and
improve education for children. Our community works on everything from
emailing users who need help, to writing new software activities, to helping
us send bring laptops to new places.
If you want to become a part of OLPC, help us in our mission, and even receive a laptop yourself, please visit amazon.com/xo.
